Beyond Barriers: Pioneering Digital Braille Access for Africa’s Marginalized Youth with visual impairments
For over a decade, we have been supporting the 6 countries that we serve, in a variety of ways, including provision od Braille assistive devices, spare parts, learning materials and training & mentorship to maximize our impact. 80 percent of learners with visual impairments are illiterate. In Africa, most children and young adults with visual impairments come from very economically marginalized backgrounds and cannot afford a Braille assistive device. We rely on the valuable contributions of donors and partners to ensure that we are able to provide access to quality education and proving the opportunity to live happy, independent and productive lives.

Our Focus
At Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa, our top priority is to achieve results, and we know that our success depends on the quality of our campaigns and partnerships. Our approach is to build strategic networks and promote programs that will help advance our work with children and young adults with visual impairments. Braille assistive technology is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for individuals with visual disabilities. We provide Orbit Readers and other digital devices that enable children and young adults with visual impairments in learning institutions to read and write in Braille. We also support their access to STEM subjects as well as ICT skills. We regularly review and upgrade the assistive devices to fit the needs of the learners with visual impairments in the schools and colleges within the countries that we serve . We also evaluate the effectiveness and affordability of the latest Braille assistive technologies to maximize our impact.
