Our Story
We Need Your Support
Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa (KBTA) is a charitable Trust based in Nairobi, Kenya. We provide access to digital Braille literacy & life skills to children and young adults with visual impairment and deaf-blindness. We serve over 3000 learners across 200 schools in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. We have been working with children and young adults with visual impairments in Africa for over a decade. We believe that children and young adults with visual impairments can only achieve real social and economic inclusion in society by gaining access to quality education. By improving literacy among children and young adults with visual impairments, we believe we can help children and young adults to receive quality education, higher job placement rates, higher levels of integration and independent living.

KBTA Needs Orbit Readers
For over a decade, we have been supporting the countries we serve in a variety of ways including providing Braille assistive devices, spare parts, learning materials and training to maximize our impact. 80 percent of learners with visual impairments are illiterate. In Africa, most children and young adults with visual impairments come from very poor backgrounds and cannot afford to buy a Braille assistive device. We rely on the contributions of donors and partners to ensure that children and young adults with visual impairments in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda can access education to live happy, independent, productive and better lives.

“A child without education is like a bird without wings.”
Our Focus
At Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa, our top priority is to achieve results, and we know that our success depends on the quality of our campaigns and partnerships. Our approach is to build strategic networks and promote programs that will help advance our work with children and young adults with visual impairments. Braille assistive technology is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for individuals with visual disabilities. We provide Perkins Braillers and Orbit Readers to children and young adults with visual impairments so that they can learn to read and write in Braille. We regularly review the need for Braille assistive devices in countries that we serve to better understand their needs. We also evaluate the effectiveness and affordability of the latest Braille assistive technologies to maximize our impact.
