Resilience Amidst Adversity: The Struggle for Accessible Education in Malawi

Malawi is a small, landlocked country in Southern Africa with a population of about 20 million. It is still one of the poorest countries suffering regular exogenous shocks such as the last cyclone Freddy, low agricultural output, relatively high inflation and low foreign exchange reserves, the economy is challenging, and growth is slow. This has a significant impact on access to education which is even more difficult for the education of children and youth with visual impairments.

A Collaborative Approach

KBTA works with the Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) which has been its implementing partner for access to quality education for the learners in its inclusive schools for a decade. In 2019 KBTA launched its digital literacy & skills program in Malawi in a total of 12 primary and 14 secondary schools. MUB has a good partnership with the Ministry of Education and has the mandate to produce school curriculum and other learning content in digital format that has allowed the learners using Orbit Reader to progress rapidly in their schoolwork, being able to read and write well and thus obtaining better grades in their exams. In Malawi KBTA has been able to provide the highest ratio of Orbit readers to learners in the 26 schools with 267 learners with visual impairments having access to the devices and a gap of only 45 learners without the devices.

KBTAs implementing partner in Tanzania is SHIVYAWATA, an apex body that includes 10 disability organizations in the country.

Dedicated staff within SHIVYAWATA focus on developing and delivering KBTA's education to employment programs across Tanzania. Given the governments support and the excellent results from the schools served by KBTA and SHIVYAWATA, there is a focus on scaling up the program across many more regions. Teachers and students appreciate these digital devices, already using them to support paperless exams resulting in transition to higher levels of education. Thus, digital literacy is transforming the educational opportunities for visually impaired youth in Tanzania. KBTA seeks your donation and partnership to expand its delivery of education-to-employment programs in Tanzania.
