Bridging the Gap: Advancing Digital Literacy for Uganda’s Visually Impaired Youth

Uganda is a landlocked country on Lake Victoria with a population of about 45 million, with an agrarian economy. 50% of the population is below the age of 15. With 41% of the population live in poverty and therefor it is considered among the poorest nations globally. There are 44 schools that accommodate learners with visual impairments. KBTA works with an international NGO, Sense International Uganda and is working to deliver its digital literacy & skills program to learners in 8 primary and 11 secondary schools where KBTA has provided 477 Orbit Readers. However, there is still a gap of 528 learners with visual impairments in just the 20 schools supported by KBTA and Sense International, that do not have access to an Orbit Reader.

KBTA has partnered with Sense International Uganda to deliver its digital literacy & skills program

Having achieved successful implementation of its digital literacy & skills program in half of the inclusive school in Uganda, KBTA also started to provide digital assistive devices and training to enhance learning of STEM and ICT skills in the secondary schools. KBTA has a constructive partnership with the Ministry of Education who appreciates the support provided by KBTA in partnership with Sense International and is finding ways to be supportive. However, given the gaps in access to digital, Braille assistive devices, KBTA needs support from donors and partners to continue to bridge the gap and eliminate the barriers facing learners with visual impairments access quality education from an early age.
