Digital Divide: Rwanda's ICT Boom and the Ongoing Challenge of Inclusion for Visually Impaired Youth

Rwanda, a small country in East Africa, has made significant strides in economic development and political stability. It is densely populated and experiencing rapid economic growth, with ICT at its core for transitioning into a knowledge-based economy. Rwanda is a leader in ICT, particularly in e-commerce, mobile technologies, and applications development, serving as a regional hub for ICT training and research. However, there have not been significant progress in ensuring INCLSION in education and employment for youth with visual impairments who encounter significant barriers in accessing education and employment opportunities.

KBTA has partnered with the Rwanda Union of the Blind (RUB) to deliver its digital literacy & skills program

There are a limited number of integrated schools where learners with visual impairments are able to access education. Presently KBTA is working to fill the gaps in digital assistive devices (the Orbit Reader 20) in 4 primary schools with a gap of 65 learners and 3 secondary schools with a gap of 142 learners. A total of 207 additional devices are needed so that every learner with visual impairments are able to have access to an Orbit Reader 20. KBTA and its partner MuB works primarily with the Ministry of Education and the Rwanda Education Board, to provide access to digital literacy and skills to 155 learners with visual impairments in Rwanda. We seek your support to build the digital skills among the visually impaired youth of Rwanda in order to bring in access to STEM subjects and ICT skills in 2024.
