Digital Empowerment: KBTA's Decade of Impact in Tanzania's Schools for the Visually Impaired

KBTA has been in Tanzania for over a decade. Since 2019 the focus change to providing access to digital literacy & skills through provision of the Orbit Readers 20. Tanzania has 99 primary and secondary schools for visually impaired learners, spread across 27 regions. KBTA has been able to fill the need for digital assistive devices for 443 students in 12 primary and 23 secondary schools. Given the vast size of Tanzania, the need is huge.

A Collaborative Approach

The public school system is well-organized and managed by 3 government entities in Tanzania; the Ministry of Education, Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) that is mandated to provide curriculum books and other learning content in digital format, and Tanzania Education Authority (TEA) that organizes fund raising for government. KBTA collaborates with the Ministry's Special Needs Directorate and TIE to provide Orbit Readers, training, support, and digital curriculum content for use in the Orbit Readers.

KBTAs implementing partner in Tanzania is SHIVYAWATA, an apex body that includes 10 disability organizations in the country.

Dedicated staff within SHIVYAWATA focus on developing and delivering KBTA's education to employment programs across Tanzania. Given the governments support and the excellent results from the schools served by KBTA and SHIVYAWATA, there is a focus on scaling up the program across many more regions. Teachers and students appreciate these digital devices, already using them to support paperless exams resulting in transition to higher levels of education. Thus, digital literacy is transforming the educational opportunities for visually impaired youth in Tanzania. KBTA seeks your donation and partnership to expand its delivery of education-to-employment programs in Tanzania.
