A Framework for Change: Advancing Disability Inclusion Through Stronger OPDs and Assistive Technology in Kenya

On 2nd June, Kilimanjaro Blind Trust Africa (KBTA) brought together stakeholders from across Kenya's disability inclusion ecosystem to disseminate the Kenya Country -Level Strategy on Strengthening Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) through Assistive Technology (AT).

While the strategy is an important milestone, it is much more than a document. It is a roadmap for ensuring that persons with disabilities and their representative organizations have the capacity, resources, and influence needed to drive meaningful inclusion and shape decisions that affect their lives.

Why This Matters

Across Kenya, persons with disabilities continue to face barriers to education, employment, healthcare, and participation in community life. While Assistive Technology can be transformative, access alone is not enough. Sustainable inclusion requires strong Organizations of Persons with Disabilities that can advocate for rights, influence policy, and ensure the needs of their communities are represented.

Many OPDs operate with limited resources and capacity, making it difficult to sustain their work and maximize their impact. This strategy recognizes that strengthening OPDs is just as important as expanding access to Assistive Technology. When OPDs are stronger, they can better influence systems, mobilize resources, and ensure that inclusion efforts are led by persons with disabilities themselves.

A Strategy Built Through Collaboration

The framework is the result of extensive consultations and validation processes conducted across Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa. OPDs, government representatives, development partners, and disability advocates came together to identify challenges, share experiences, and co -create solutions.

Supported by the Global Disability Innovation Hub, the process combined evidence-based research with lived experience, ensuring that the strategy reflects both practical realities and long-term opportunities for change.

What Changes Now?

The dissemination event marked an important transition from consultation to action.

The strategy provides a shared framework for stakeholders to strengthen OPD capacity, improve access to Assistive Technology, enhance participation in governance, and build sustainable partnerships and financing mechanisms. It creates a common agenda that can help align efforts across the disability inclusion sector and move beyond fragmented interventions.

Most importantly, it provides a pathway for translating evidence into measurable impact for persons with disabilities across Kenya.

For years, KBTA has witnessed how Assistive Technology can transform lives by increasing independence, access to education, employment opportunities, and participation in society.

However, lasting change requires more than devices. It requires strong organizations that can advocate for inclusive policies, hold systems accountable, and ensure that persons with disabilities remain at the center of decision-making.

That is why KBTA is committed not only to expanding access to Assistive Technology but also to strengthening the disability inclusion ecosystem that supports it.

Looking Ahead

The true success of this strategy will not be measured by its launch, but by its implementation.

It will be reflected in stronger OPDs, greater access to Assistive Technology, more inclusive policies, and increased participation of persons with disabilities in shaping Kenya's development agenda.

The dissemination event marked the beginning of that journey, one built on partnership, evidence, and a shared commitment to creating a more inclusive future for all.
